Career Opportunities in Municipal Law Enforcement

Becoming a Municipal Law Enforcement Officer is a challenging and rewarding career. Municipal Law Enforcement Officers are appointed by their municipal council under the provisions of the Police Services Act or other Provincial Statute to enforce local municipal by-laws or other provincial statutes. Serving their community, Municipal Law Enforcement Officers may enforce by-laws relating to:

  • business and trade licensing
  • zoning (land use)
  • property standards
  • noise abatement and control 
  • woodlot/forestry conservation
  • building code enforcement 
  • fire protection
  • lottery licensing
  • parking and traffic
  • animal control
  • signs and advertising devices
  • environmental protection

 

Salaries for full-time front line Muncipal Law Enforcement Officers generally range from $40,000-$90,000 a year and typically include a comprehensive benefits package and pension. Management positions within the field of municipal law enforcement typically range between $60,000 to $120,000 and also typically includes a comprehensive benefits package and pension.
